Parent’s Loyalty
Loyalty, broadly defined as faithfulness or allegiance to individuals or groups, is linguistically originated from the Latin word lex (“law” or “statute”). It appears that various manifestations of loyalty have been recognized throughout the human history as part of belonging to associations and related identities. While the phenomenon of loyalty conveys a special importance for a family – a group of people connected through kinship ties, most in-depth explorations of the phenomenon are done by marketing, economics, political science, sociology, and religious scholars. Though the term “family loyalty” is widely used in the family studies and family therapy fields, there is no clear or uniformed definition of the concept.
Family loyalty refers to the feelings of mutually shared obligations, responsibilities, commitment, and closeness that exist among family members (e.g., parents and children, between siblings, grandparents and grandchildren, and other close family members).
Overall, family loyalty indicates a sense of fundamental and mutual commitment between family members and is relevant to all types of their relationships, both vertical and horizontal, and associated roles – parents, children, siblings, and partners.
Children have a huge sense of loyalty to their families. This loyalty serves as a form of self-protection and as protection for the entire family. In truth, children will often defend unhealthy parenting behaviours out of fear of breaking the code of their family.
There are five ways to improve your family loyalty.
- Make family a safe space. ...
- Don't compare your kids. ...
- Prioritize family. ...
- Teach children to serve one another. ...
- Emphasize your family's values.
What are the characteristics of loyalty? There are a few Traits of a Loyal Person.
- Honesty. ...
- They Stand by You and Take a Stand for You. ...
- They Respect Boundaries. ...
- They Celebrate Your Success. ...
- They have a Positive Outlook on Life. ...
- They Invest in the Relationship. ...
- They Don't have Conditions in a Relationship.
Overall, family loyalty indicates a sense of fundamental and mutual commitment between family members and is relevant to all types of their relationships, both vertical and horizontal, and associated roles – parents, children, siblings, and partners.
